Best TV for gaming?

Currently I have a 47" Widescreen HDTV, but it only supports 1080i +480p, no 720p or 1080p. It is also 8 years old and the IC's are slowly going out, and the picture distorts on the edges when gaming. I've done all the adjusting I can do but I don't think it will ever look good.

I'll be getting a PS3 in the near future, and would like to know what type of TV would be considered optimal for gaming. LCD vs DLP vs Plasma.

This question is virtually impossible to answer without additional information. Let's start with the basics: what is your budget and what size are you looking for (this includes any restraints on size, such as getting it to fit in an existing home entertainment center)? What will the TV be used for besides gaming?

I'm still happy with my 50" 1080p Samsung DLP after about 1.5 years, I use it with a PS2 over component and a PS3 over HDMI. Upscaling works well and I haven't noticed any problems with lag (but I don't play frame-accurate fighting games like Virtua Fighter).

Cost is now as low as $1,000 for these and while they don't wall-hang they are only ~13 inches deep and ~60 pounds.

The best? For its price range maybe, but probably not if money is no object.

Sorry -

I'm actually wanting something a bit smaller, like a 42" or 40". I feel the 47" is a bit too large for our area right now.

Budget, around $1000-$1500.

Will be using the TV for gaming, and watching movies, and television...basically, the "family TV".

I bought my Toshiba 42HL67 back in May of last year and I love it. Now, it's only 720p native but considering my couch is about 13 feet from the TV it looks perfect. They make a 1080p version of the same TV but I've heard it's buggy.

Panasonic makes a 42" 1080p Plasma as well that would probably look quite nice.

I know that Samsung and Toshiba have "game" modes that apparently enhance games or something but I've never noticed a difference with mine being off or on.

I have a samsung LCD of the 71F family, plays nicely on my PS3 with the latest firmware (for the TV and PS3, the 71F had bad "TBE" bugs early on, but that is gone with the latest firmware for the TV (at least on mine)).

i have a westinghouse 37incher. it is awesome with the ps3 at 1080p via hdmi. the pc is also connected via the dvi port at 1920x1080 res. u might be able to find it around 700 brand new.

the only problem i have is the ps2 connected via the component. in the settings, i have it at widescreen. during gameplay, it looks swished, what gives??? can someone help me?

I have a Philips 33 inch CRT. It will do 1080p. Retails for around 800 bucks, I paid 400.

I dont give a fuck what anyone says, quality CRT's still look much better than quality LCD's.
Wont go into how great it is, image quality seems to be the kind of thing I'd rather people see personally than take my opinion for.

Just go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City. Ask if they have any HD CRT's around. Check 'em out.
Then go home and buy it online for about half of what they charge.

That widescreen setting seems to only apply to movies and a handful of games that support widescreen (which are few and far between, since Sony now has a PS3 that makes all games native widescreen).

Depending on the game you will likely have to settle for fullscreen mode. Depending on what game you have that may mean constanly switching the TV mode back and forth, since you will still be using the HD cables on your PS2 regardless of what you're doing with it.

when i use the fullscreen setting in the ps2, the see 4 black bars now. it looks like the picture is smaller, but the ratio is correct. with widescreen setting, it looks swished with the top horizontal bar and bottom horizontal bar.
