I am seconding Lee Van Cleef, and want to add Humphrey Bogart if you really mean old school, and also Toshiro Mifune if this can include foreign actors.

Both Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson were in the military and saw combat, I believe both also wounded in battle. So I'm going to go with one of those 2.
