I was just wondering what everyone thinks on when the best time to upgrade should be.
Now or in 5 months?

I'm just thinking if I had a rig planned out and I'm going to buy it now, wouldn't it be cheaper in five months time?

yes, but there is always going to be something better out you will end up waiting and waiting if you thought like that. You are just going to have to bite the bullet.

Upgrade to a rig that meets your need right now, plus a little for headroom.
There's no reason to buy tons more power than you need. Only you know how you use your rig now and what you might want to us it for in the near future.

I already got a really good rig planned, I'm just trying to prevent what happened with my last upgrade, wherein I spent a bunch of money only to find out I can't even run games on max details a few months later. And I spent almost as much as I'm about to spend now.

Well AMD's new 940 pin socket AM2 cpu's and DDR2 ram will be out in a few months, plus new motherboards for them.

The cliche line is to not wait because there'll always be something better on the horizon.

As for me, I'm waiting a while for that stuff to be out on the market and debugged a little bit until building my next rig, maybe till early 2007.

Experience: I bought an Athlon Winchester core cpu about a week before they were obsoleted & replaced by faster, cooler. lower power Venice core models, because of that "don't wait there'll always be something better on the horizon" advice I bought from someone else. GGrrrrr gnash gnash arrgh
