Best time to buy a laptop?

I don't know if the "back to school" specials actually give us more savings, but I'm not sure in any way. There's a lot of great deals out there right now with the Dell 600m and the Toshiba M15-S205 (I'll most likely get the Toshiba one, it's all about the little things). Is August usually the best time to start buying because of the "back to school" specials? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm off to college.... kinda happy....... but sad too.....

I'm looking to get the Toshiba Satellite Pro M10-S405. I'm just wondering if retail stores usually give out mad rebates during the "back to school" shopping seasons.

I would like to wait untill the Radeon 9600m's are out. Hopefully that will be during the Back to School rush. They'd be crazy not to put then.

No I don't need the latest graphics for a laptop. I'm not into games. I'm more into video and music etc etc. I just need any experienced buyer's advice on when the best deals for laptops usually are. ANYONE please.

I figure its best to get the latest DX9 chip in it simply so it'll be usefull that much longer.

Hehe...on the same line of thought, it'll prolly be best to get a DVD burner, so u wunt be outdated faster...

Nah, i follow a simple philosophy....always buy one level below the current top of the range. Top of the range are so so much overpriced. And if you want something that lasts a while, then there'd be no point going for the "in the process of being phased out" technology either. So the solution is the in-between models....

Sorry dude, can't help you there. I live in NZ....we dun get ur "Back to school" specials. However, on a more general note, I would say buy now rather than later....if you wait, u'll be waiting forever (btw, i've been waiting for almost 6 months now). ;)

I've been waiting since April to get a laptop, and every few weeks my mind changes as new things get out. I see centrinos released, then I want that. Then I see the new Toshiba 5205, and now I am set on that. If nothing new comes out before July, I'll get the 5205.

But you can't wait and get one, because the more you wait, the more laptops are released, and then newer ones will be coming out, so theres nothing you can really wait for. I would check July 4th deals and see whats good then.

alby4ever, welcome to college life, (freshmen year of college will The most memorable year of your entire academic career, so enjoy every moment of it).

I think you should wait till around August to purchase a new laptop, which is part of my agenda. The current notebook market is a bit "archaic", since the last large batches of notebooks were released around March (the whole Centrino driving craze) by most manufacturers. Tech site, such as cnet have reported that HP will release 10 new models during 2nd half of the year, so it is rational to think that other companies will follow a similar product roadmap. Likewise, most companies are focusing very intensively on the notebook segment of the market b/c it is the last "frontier" of computer market that is still showing an auspicious trend, so this tend to encourage big manufacturers to update their product lineup in a very short cycle.

Beyond the business incentive of fast pace product cycle, there is the technological progression factor. For example, 7200 rpm mobile HD will probably start showing its presence in the market in 2003. Then there is Intel?s persistent push for higher cpu speed (1.7 GHz is just isn't fast enough for Intel?s marketing strategy), thus it is predicted that Intel will refresh its P-M clock speed. Then, there is the obvious V-card variable, which is a chronicle topic of debates @ the forum.

So, the compendium of all the factors points to a notebook purchasing date around August or perhaps even later if you have the luxury to wait. (My advice, first couple of months of college is just too good to splurge in front of a computer screen :)P

Thanks johngalt and andrewjm. I will probably buy a laptop around August. I have no choice because I was so sure about getting the Toshiba M10-S405, but now I'm really considering the Dell 600m because of price and warranty (Dell has accident protection, which I think I'm gonna need). The Toshiba one will cost me about 2200 after buying Best Buy's extended service plan. Choosing a piece of equipment could never be harder =\

Big thanks to johngalt for the lenghty reply. Informative and I appreciate it.

Oh hehe, sorry alby4ever. Dell has stackable coupons about every 4-6 weeks. As always, prices will constantly be dropping and specs will constantly be rising so I'd recommend waiting until there is a coupon deal in August. That's what I'm doing, anyway.

The hitachi 7k60 (7200 rpm hd) is already out to OEMs and a few manufacturers have started incorporating them (voodoopc), and europe for some odd reason has both the gofx5600 and m10 before we do... but i'm certain we'll get our chance before the new school year.

i remember talking with guy from gateway store. *was for g/f*

: P.

Anyway, he more or less said christmas shopping time was usually there'd be the best deals.

Most of the time it's not so much things getting cheaper it's just you get more bang for your buck...so you might just want to decide what you really need and will be satisfied and go for it.

but waitin till august seems good.

If what I want isn't out yet I'm getting an old IBM thinkpad. They can be had for less than $350 and they're enough for schoolwork (i hear they're pretty snappy under linux) and I'll fleabay it when dell/acer/toshiba/whoever integrates the new stuff.
