The best thermal paste on the market would probably be something like this(not in any particular order):

Shin-Etsu X23 & G751
Arctic Cooling MX2
IC Diamond 7
Tuniq TX2
Arctic Silver 5

Petra's shop has almost all of them (lacking the tuniq tx2). I don't think you could go wrong with any one of them, although I wouldn't choose the As5 just cause I don't like the fact it needs a cure time before it performs well.

Most top quality thgermal pastes are all so close to each other you cannot go wrong with the top brands!

Also when ordering a top quality Heatsink or anything else that requires thermal paste you rarely ever get a crappy thermal paste shipped with the heatsink.
In fact why ship a heatsink that suppose to be top teir 1 quality and include a crappy thermal compound....lol

i got a new AC Freezer Pro 7 and KIND of messed up the install. i installed it the wrong way(fan pulling air in the wrong way). so i had to take it out and turn it the other way. thats about it, but the thing is that i am getting the same temperatures as when i had stock HSF from intel. i have the E2160.

there is ONE funny thing though. i was getting 44c idle when i oc'd it to 2.7ghz with both HSF. today, i went and oc'd to 3ghz and now i idle 40c. i only set the fan on AC Freezer to 60% because its too loud at 100%.

im thinking its because i messed up the install and now the thermal paste is messed up.

What you are describing is not an unusual occurance!
What I would do is take the heatsink off!!
Clean the thermal paste off all surfaces.
Then reapply the thermal paste following exactly the manufacturers recommendation!!
See if that doesn`t help!!

Even though the Freezer Pro7 is a nice heatsink it`s not exactly what I would call a good heatsink to over clock with!!

Cool Laboratory Liquid Metal isn't exactly brand name and it performs just as good as these top thermal pastes, it's just more of a pain cause it's electrically conductive.

The best paste is the one that seperates the least amount of cash from our wallets. Lets be honest here another 1-3 degrees of better cooling may give us a little more peace of mind but in the end most of the people here buy good enough coolers that the chip isnt gonna run anywhere close to temps that will kill the CPU, so they will outlast the time you will keep them before upgrading. I admit tho even I am guilty of buying AS5 when I prob didnt need to.

That Liquid metal is also dangerous if used improperly and if you are not careful. There is NO absolutely No margin for error!
You get even the tiniest drop on your mobo and your mobo in the wrong place and you kiss your mobo goodbye!!!

Shin-Etsu gets my vote as well... Clever dad put way too much on the CPU at first, had to reseat the heatsink and don't have a lot left... Probably going to have to reapply to my 8800GT if I get some more RAMsinks...

There is an interesting article by Dan of Dan's Data in which he shows that toothpaste and some type of food have thermal conductivity equal to todays best thermal pastes.
They proably wouldn't last more then half a day as they would quickly dry out though.

Actually, I use AS5, or Shin-Etsu on my OCed machines. But to tell you the truth, if you aren't OCing, the white stuff is within 2-3c of the top end compounds. I've built many machines for ppl, and just used the generic stuff, or pre-installed pad with no problems.

I would have assumed so too...but for some reason Sunbeam ships the Tuniq120 Tower with the lower performing TX-1 thermal past and not the higher performing TX-2 paste.

I guess they save the best for the competition to use on their heatsinks.

And TX-1 sucks ass compared to AS5, at least in my experience these past weeks when it comes to applying it to your IHS/HSF surface.

It doesn't spread very well even under full pressure of the downforce of the Tuniq screwed into the backplate. Think putty.

You are correct but my point being unless you are looking for the absolute 100% best temps you can possibly get the heatsink manufacturers do not ship that crappy tan or pink stuff with their heatsinks!!

Everybody will have there preferences...thats just life!!

I've become fond of the shin-etsu thermal pads from sidewinder, just because they eliminate user error almost completely, and because they give very consistent and very good results-

Trim to fit for smaller die sizes like socket 462 and gpu's...

They need to cure a little bit above 60 degrees C before they're at their best- buy 10, just to have 'em around when you need 'em.

Your best bet for TIMs:

Lapped: Shin-Etsu X23, IC Diamond 7, maybe AS Ceramique

Unlapped: Shin-Etsu X23, Shin-Etsu G751/AC MX-1/AC MX-2, IC Diamond 7

Tuniq TX-2 is also good (a hair better than MX-1 or MX-2) but whether or not it is more or less useful on lapped surfaces is anyone's guess.
