I like notepad++. You shouldn't have to go through all that trouble though. Just add a boolean value to about:config Add "extensions.checkCompatibility" false and restart. This disables compatibility checking, and many older extensions will work fine. The ones that don't work generally won't cause any kind of catastrophic failures or anything.

UltraEdit is one of best, but it is not free... Notepad++, second best, is poor man's UE.

ultraedit for most things, but context and notepad++ text editors are noteworthy and both are free.
