Where do you live in NY that getting big limes is tough? Go to a spanish-american shop and they'll have 'em.

well for bulk i say stick simple with cuervo gold...you dont want a pertron or anything too high end for margaritaz

for mix i prefer cabo wabo - not too seet, not too sour

mixer? no

all you need is minute maid frozen lime-ade. two of those. use the amount of liquid as per instructions, but half the liquid should be tequila and 1/8 to 1/4 should be cointreau or grand mariner. the rest of the liquid should probably be ice cubes.

This is my personal favorite:

1 1/2 oz Sauza Conmemorativo Tequila
1 oz Cointreau
1 oz Presidente Brandy
3 oz Sweet and Sour
1/2 oz Lime Juice

Others prefer this:

2 oz Patron Silver
1/2 oz Cointreau
1/2 oz Presidente Brandy
2 oz Sprite
1 1/2 oz Orange Juice
1 oz Sweet and Sour
a few olives

And for a fast easy frozen margarita take 1 small can frozen limeade and dump in blender, fill empty can all the way with tequila and dump in blender, fill can 1/3 way with triple sec then top blender off with ice. Squeeze a lime in for a little extra flavor.

Jesus man. If I'm drinking Patron, it's straight up.

The silver isnt aged at all, thats why its so smooth (tasteless almost) and so cheap. You can get Patron Silver for about half the price of the aged Patron. If you want tequila straight up go with Patron Anejo or Sauza Tres Generaciones Anejo, both are aged and 100% agave. Thats when you can really start to taste the difference.

I see the OP edited his post, he had asked for margaritas that werent slushed, dunno if he changed his mind?

I know that, but it's still over $35/fifth here. Being on a college budget, mixed drinks get the crappy stuff ;)

I see. Feel free to sub out Jose Cuervo for the tequila and Triple Sec for the Cointreau. Brandy is cheap so no need to sub out that. It will taste more like alcohol and not be as strong but will be considerably cheaper.

best tequila for magaritas? = something you'd actually take a shot. It doesn't have to be the best of the best but if you enjoy taking a shot of it, use it. Nothing says crappy 'mixed drinks' more than crap liquor you wouldn't drink stand alone. (Same goes when cooking with wine.)

Use the cheap stuff for margaritas. I think the harshness of the cheap stuff actually makes margaritas better. If you really want to use some good stuff, I think it's pretty typical to use a silver margirta as oppose to an aged gold one. On occasion I have used Herradrua Silver with good luck.

Best Margarita I ever had used Herradura Reposado. I am not a tequila drinker, so I have no idea if that is any good or not, but the Margarita was sooooo smooth.

That's pretty much my never-fail frozen margarita recipe.
