Best SUV for $10K?

GasX

Lifer
I have 2 large dogs and they need to ride in the back of an SUV.

What would you recommend I get?

Early WJ Grand Cherokees (1999-2000) had problems with front and rear axle whine leading to failure. Other than that they were pretty solid. If you can find one with a V8 and QuadraDrive II, snatch it up.

Probably go for a 6cyl to save gas...

You won't save any gas, the I6 is a gas hog. I believe it is 1MPG difference between the two.

The class of SUV you're looking has about the same interior space as a wagon. Why not a used Suburu Outback or Legacy?

My Y chromosome is resistant to such ideas

You're more concerned with looks over function? And you relate being concerned with looks to being a man?!?!

I guess I'd recommend the Pathfinder but they all probably have vanity mirrors on the drivers side visor. You may want to look for something with an AC outlet for your curling iron. 😛

Something with an onboard tampon holder would be nice...

i have a '96 explorer v8 right now. My next vehicle purchase will be another explorer. My gf has a jeep cherokee sport...she (and I) hate it with a passion and she still wishes she bought an explorer.

Any issues I should be on the lookout for if buying one?

This is a great place to start.

The 6 cyl's have a handful of common problems. Fwiw, i've had one problem (o2 sensors) in the ~10 years i've owned this. The paint still looks like the day I bought it.

edit: it's probably in your favor, but explorer's have horrible resale value, so it looks like you might be able to take advantage of that!

I had a loaded 97 Jeep GC v8 etc.. and a 97 Pathfinder SE and I kept the Pathfinder even though it had 50% higher mileage, I never had a good feeling abot that Jeep.

The older 95-99 Explorer/Mountaineers had an issue with the front antiroll bar I believe. It was plastic and was later campaigned out to a metal one. The plastic ones had a tendency to break and make the front end terribly wallowy.

Nice thing about a Mountaineer is that they've already got most of the stuff you'd typically want on the car already. AWD, V8, leather, CD, anti-theft... but the looks are bleh for the 2000+

And if you shop around you may be able to find a 2000+ Exploder V8 for around 10k. My friend bought a 2001 Pathfinder to replace his 92 Explorer XLT, loves it other than the fact that it drinks super.
