Best Surge Protection for Home Theater

What does everyone use to protect their setups? I know that cheapo surge protectors won't really do anything for large surges like lightening strikes. I've been thinking of just picking up a UPS that's normally for computers since it would also give me some measure of protection from brownouts and offer some conditioning as well. Are there better options than that.

My modest equipment is:
50" Samsung plasma
Sony PS 3
Dish Network 722 HD receiver
Mini bookshelf stereo (looking to replace this with a soundbar w/sub-woofer soon)
External HDD that I use as a DVR for my Dish Receiver.

If I gi with a UPS, about how large does it need to be. I'm not looking for power during a blackout, just the protection it offers.

Not sure the best option, but I will say that you should be careful with a battery backup. If you plug all of your stuff into the battery side you may find it just trips the whole thing because of the power draw.

If you want to have your plasma tv on a UPS, you'll probably need a rather beefy commercial grade one as even the top of the line consume UPS's wouldn't have the power output to accommodate.

IMO surge protectors are basically a big scam. Modern electronics are internally protected to withstand against minor power surges. A direct lightning strike on your electrical system will fry everything connected, regardless if it is connected to a UPS or not. I don't see why you would need a battery backup for a home theater (unless you have a projector for protecting the bulb).

Thanks to..."fortuitous circumstances," (and perhaps a slight ethical failure on my part) my new plasma and stereo are now protected by a Monster Cable Home Theater Power Center, HTC 1000 MKIII.

I notice you're ALL turning green with envy...😛

Do I think it's worth the $199 suggested retail price, or the more realistic $100 selling price? Hell NO, but I suspect it's at least slightly better than the 10 year old POS $4.00 power strip I had been using...

Of course, this thing (according to the Monster propaganda) will protect against everything short of a nuk-u-ler blast...🙄
