Hello everyone,

I'm trying to prolong the life of my PowerMac G4. It does everything I need it to, and runs like a dream. Only problem is it's hard drive is running out of space. Fast.

I realize this is primarily a PC-based forum, but I figured external hard drives work with both platforms, so the expertise here on these forums can definitely help me in my situation.

Please do not remind me that Google is my friend. From your personal experience, do you have a brand/model/make of external hard drives that you would:

A) Recommend
or
B) Avoid

Only stipulations are it must work with a Firewire400 port, and preferably, be under or around $200.

Thanks,
Brad

I personally do not have much experience with external hard drives but I do have several hard drive enclosures that work very well. You would definitely be abe to get a good enclosure and a very decent size hard drive sub $200.

You can get something like this

Firewire Enclosure

or

Another one

and then pick up any $150 or less HD in the Hot Deals forums.

That's what I've done with two drives. I have a 320 GB drive that I got for $129 and an enclosure for $30 or so. Pretty cheap.

Something like this (320GB IDE 7200) is a nice drive.

I would recommend buying a USB/Firewire enclosure and seperate hard drive. I got a USB enclosure for about $15 and a 200GB IDE drive for $30. 200GB external for $45 ftw!

The extra bonus with this method is that the HD will have a much longer warranty.

get a firewire/usb 2.0 enclosure then put a nice 300GB/400GB hard drive in it. works perfectly for me.
