hey any suggestions???

my geforce256 just went out... what would be my best bet without overdoing it (comp is a 600mhz PIII Dell)? under 130 is preferable due to the fact my dad is buying it for the family comp...

correct me if i am wrong but a GeForce 4 is an overkill for a PIII 600 Mhz processor. I think that you need atleast 1.0 Ghz to get the full performance of GF4s.

i think that your best bet would be to get a 64 MB GeForce 3 TI 200 or ATI Radeon 8500 . They should cost you around ~90 shipped from most places nowadays. I would pick one of these two cards, perferably the Radeon. Any game released upto right now and in the near future will run with excellent quality on these two cards.

If you want to spend less money, then Consider GeForce 2 TI or ATI Radeon 7500. they should cost ~55 and most games will run fine on these cards but latest games might be little choppy.

Dont waste your money on a GeForce 4 because you wont be able to get the full performance of it b/c of 600 Mhz processor as i said earlier. But, if you are planning to upgrade your system in the near future, then you might want to buy the GF4 and use this card in your new system later.

hope that help
thanks

I would recommend going with a adeon 8500le 128 for the high end. the 128 meg version runs better and has better overclocking. Anyway, the Radeons are less CPU limitd than Geforce 4. At the low en,. go with the 64 meg or a geforce3 ti200. Depends on how much you want to spend really.

Woops, sorry, I didn't even see what his CPU was, yeah a GF3 Ti200 would be much better suited for your needs. Sorry bout that

 Yeah, with a 600mhz CPU there is little point going above a $60 GF2TI, GF4MX440, Rad7500 or Xabre400 (Xabre is DX8). If you want you can get a GF3TI200, Rad8500LE or Rad9000pro for under $100, enabling AA and Aniso should help overcome the limits imposed by the CPU a bit. The best card for $130 is certainly the GF4TI4200-64MB as they o/c pretty much to GF4TI4600 speeds! Still, unless you are 1ghz+ that would be very pointless. IMHO save some cash and get one of the $60 cards I mentioned, the $90ish DX8 cards I mentioned are still worth it, $30 isn't much anyway.
