Best sub $100 Video Card

I have a friend at work who wants to play some newer games and is thinking of a video card upgrade. He want the best video card he can get for under $100. That limit is absolute. No going over $100. Not even for a rebate.

He was looking at a 9400GT on Amazon and liked the reviews. I looked at the specs but it did not seem like he would get much for his hundred bucks so I thought I would ask you guys.

I don't know anything about his system except that it uses a PCI-E slot. I don't know what games he plays or at what resolution. What I do know is that he is looking for the best value for his money and that he has under $100.

I doubt you'll do any better than the Radeon 4830's for sub $100.

You can find them shipped for under $100 and will run circles around a 9400GT. That's a lot of card for the money.

How much are 4830s these days? Or just wait for the 4750 (die shrunk 4830 (?) with a GDDR5 to make up for a 128-bit memory bus, 80% of a 4850, rumoured to be >$100)

4830 is in his budget, there is one on Newegg right now for $90 shipped with an additonal $15 rebate beyond that price making it $75. The 4750 is supposed to basically perform the same as the 4830 as I understand, but just be cheaper to produce. I doubt there'd be much reason to pass up on a 4830 for a 4750 if you wanted to buy now. The 4830 is cheap, they overclock very well. and perform quite decently.

Thanks! I sent him an email with a link to the the $90 powercolor 4830. It has a $15 rebate so its really $75 for people who don't procrastinate.

The 4830 beats the 9600gt by a fair margin.

I upgraded from the 3850 to the 4830. Since the 3850 and the 9600gt traded blows, I can tell you this for sure. In some cases my performance is almost 70% better with AA/AF enabled.

How is the 9600GSO from Gigabyte? They have a 96 shader 256 bit 512MB card passively cooled with a heatpipe solution. 84.99 at the egg.

That's odd. That has 96SP and 256bit bus. Doesn't add up. A mistake?

It will still be slower than 4830 considering 4830 is a little faster than 8800gt with 112SP.

edit:

After searching the web this model actually has 48SP like other GSO with 256bit bus.

It looks like the 4830 generally performs near 9800GT levels (sometimes a bit slower, sometimes a bit faster). My guess that the 9800GT is Nvidia's closest competition, so I would imagine the 4830 is a solid step ahead of that 9600GSO.

Yeah, I think it might be. I though they were supposed to have 48 shaders.

HD4830 for sure. If you overclock it a little you can get performance near that of an HD4850. It can also pretty much handle everything at 1680x1050.

QFT. With my overclock i'm right up there with the 4850's. I also game at 1680x1050 and I've got to say that not one game has problems playing at 30fps (even Crysis WH on med-high).

My 3850 sucked at Dirt and Crysis.
