Hi all,
I'm asking this question because I recently bought sharp aquos blu-ray player bdhp21u to pair up with my sharp 46" 1080p hdtv lcd.

I played several dvd movies using sharp aquos bdhp21u (1080p output) versus my hd-dvd player toshiba hd-a3 (1080i output and the tv does the de-interlacing) and the toshiba hands down has much better near-hd picture compared to the blu-ray player.

Besides the PS3's upconverting quality, what's the best upconverter for standard DVD's on the blu-ray standalones? Actual user experiences is much appreciated.

I have the Samsung BD-UP5000 which has the Reon-VX HQV video processor and it blows every other upconverter I have seen out of the water.

Therefore I'd recommend the Samsung BD-P2500/2550 which is their new Blu-ray player that is profile 2.0, comes with 7.1 analogs, and offers Netflix Streaming.

Any machine you can find with a REON HQV or QDEO chip it in will upconvert better than any other BD player. The only ones I know of right now are:

Samsung BD-P2500/2550 (mentioned above)
LG BH200 (has been seen for $275 in big box retailers)

I suspect OPPO will come out with one soon, but I don't remember seeing the announcement.

I guess another option would be to buy the new Vizio 50" Plasma which has the REON chip built in and would upconvert all SD material through this chip :)

I have a BD-P2550 and have been very pleased with it. The upconversion is notably superior to the that on my old upconverting Sony DVD player.
