Spybot does something to my computer that disables my ability to use Windows Update (the website).

I was having problems with IE( very slow to launch) and some websites didn't load right..I ran both spybot and adware but still had problems. I used hijackthis in safe mode to get rid of winshow, ever since then my IE is running smooth

Ad-Aware is free.

Use that along side SpyBot, which is also free.

both are spyware themselves
Umm... haven't heard that before. Did some Google searches, found this:

The rumor about AdAware containing spyware probably got started when somebody ran had both AdAware and Spybot installed, ran AdAware first and when Spybot scanned, it reported finding spyware in AdAware.

That happens when AdAware makes a backup of everything it's told to delete. Naturally, Spybot finds that spyware in AdAware's backup folder. Equally naturally, most people don't bother to read exactly where the spyware is found, they only see "AdAware" and start spreading the word that it's packed with spyware.

So it sounds like it's a myth.

no myth. adaware adds its own spywhere when you 1st load it. all you have to do is run it again and all is well. sort of mythsterious ist it?

i just added spybot tonight and it found a lot of registry intrusions that adaware didnt.
