Best speed to burn audio cds for portable cd players

Hey,

I just got a used car but the car only has a tape deck. In order to listen to CDs, I have to use those Audio Car Kits that come with the portable cd players. Anyways, I was wondering, what's the best speed to burn audio CDs at for Portable CD players? I heard faster speeds may cause the cd to skip more often. I also heard that 1x was the best speed but my burner won't allow me to burn at 1x. The lowest speed my Lite-On (32x12x40) will burn music at is 8x. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

Years ago, it mattered what speed you burned audio CDs at, but I think that it was more of a hardware limitation than anything. I burn audio CD's at 40x nowadays and I never experience any skips/pops in any of my CD players, be it portable/car/home.

Depends on how old and crappy your audio cd player is. If it's relatively new, it can handle the 40x with no problem. Try it out, if it can't then lower the speeds a bit.

Really it's the dye on the disks that makes the most difference. The bluer color on disks make by Taiyo Yuden and others has higher contrast than the silvery-green (cyano...) used by CMC Magnetics and others. I don't burn faster than 4x (but that's my burner's top speed <g>) and no one has trouble reading them. And slower really is better, just burn them at the slowest speed of your drive if you know the target is an old audio, car or portable player.

p.s. Taiyo Yudens are sold here under the Fuji, TDK, Sony, HP brands (look for Made in Japan on the label and a screw-down knob on the top of the spindle).bh.
