I have a choice between Logitech Z-540, Creative Inspire 5.1, Hercules X something 510, Altec Lansing X3051, and Altec Lansing 251. Which one is the best?

aren't speaker comparisons subjective? u might have to listen to each set and determine which ones u like best. i myself have the logitech z540s and they are amazing. not to say the others aren't but i'm a little biased :)

I was in the same boat a few days ago.
And still undecided about the Logitech Z-640 and Altec Lansing 251.
But many ppl recommended me the Logitech, over creative and altec.
I pretty much going with the Logitech.

Depends on which Creative ones. Cos some of their 5.1 systems suck, but others (like the 5300) are quite good.

I've got both the Creative 5.1 5300 and the AL 251. Overall, I like the Creative 5300's just a little bit better over the AL 251's. The 251 sounds better at higher volumes, but at "reasonable" sound levels, the 5300s' seem much more crisper. Neither one is a bad choice if you're looking for a budget 5.1 speaker system. True, they don't sound as good as my Klipsch 4.1, but they do offer a much better bang for the buck ratio.

I have been using the Creative 5300 since my amp died, anyway for the price I`m more then pleased with the sound quality ,as always sound quality is always subjective but for the price they are good buys.

Btw don`t over look the Videologic Z550 ,I hear they are excellent and have been getting great reviews.

I own the 5300`s as well. And unless you wack the volume up to 75%+ then the clarity is fine, after that though, you do get a bit of distortion.

Creative made them more for sound quality then loudness for the price so that`s true, the Logitech Z-540 speakers will go louder before you hear distortion so it`s really down to the buyer.

Ive gotta admit, that set up rules, but until something far better than my current setup comes out, and 6.1/7.1 becomes used more, i`ll be happy with the Audigy1 + Inspire5300 5.1.

Why not a 4.1 setup? The Boston BA7800s blow away all those listed. You can get them on eBay for $75.

Edit: I have a 2x BA7800 setup :D

Hehe, it's worth spending the money. How often do you buy a speaker set up which matches home theatre sound? Might aswell go for it. Unlike your pc they wont need replacing for years.

i'd say altec 251...

read a few reviews..

they all suggest altec 251 over logitech z-540.. why?
because logitech has muddy highs and boomy bass..

altec 251 sounds much better..
