I've got some really cheap 3 piece Boston Acoustic speakers that just sound horrible. I think the whole setup may put out around 15W, and the tiny 4.5" sub distorts when the music gets up to a "nominal" volume. Way before the fun starts. :|

So I'm really looking for my next computer upgrade to be speakers since I skimped on those the first time around. I mainly use my speakers to listen to MP3's since my computer is my source of music(college dorm room), do the usual gaming and rarely watch a DVD.

Some points to consider:

-Never been a big fan of the 4/5 speaker setups. I'd rather get a system with 2 well rounded satellites that have enough wattage to produce clean sound throughout the whole spectrum and a good sub to fill out the low end.

-Would like to the cost to fall between $80-120. Wouldn't mind spending a tad more if it was alot better product, but nothing like the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. Those are just WAY too expensive for a 3 piece computer setup.

That's about it. I'm not partial to any brands or anything, just want the best speakers in that price range.

Boston Acoustic BA-4800's can be had for around $130. Some even say that they are better than the Klipsch.

Sure, they are a 4.1 setup. But you can either put the rear speakers on the desktop, or send 'em to me. ;)

Probably the next best would be either the BA-790's (same sats as the BA-4800's, smaller sub) or the Altec Lansing ATP3's. Both of those are 2.1 solutions.

I just bought a Yamaha YSTM 100W two speaker set-up on egay for $80. The put out 20 watts apiece. They don't make them anymore but the reviews are really good. I listen to MP3s and wanted the bass closer and not on a hidden woofer. Haven't gotten them yet to give you my opinion.

Def, on the low end of your price range ($80) consider the Boston Acoustics BA790. Larger sub than you have, and good sound. On the high end of your price range ($120) you may have to stretch a bit but consider the Boston Acoustics BA4800. I just set up a system for my neighbor and we paired the BA4800's to an AOpen AW744 Pro sound card ($26) and they do sound good.

CompUSA is now selling the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's for $179. I have them and after you do some tweaking to your mixer settings they are something else <g>!

For a 2.1 setup, try Cambridge Soundworks Microworks, Boston Acoustic Media Theater, Altec Lansing ACS 48, and Yamaha YST-MS50 they are all great sets that fall in your price range.
