I'm going to need about 450 linear feet of 2x4 to get to the point where I can start drywalling my basement. Home Depot is 2 miles away, but I haven't been impressed with their dimensional lumber thus far. Where would you go? Lowe's? Manards? Independent local lumber yard?

I cannot recommend Menards. I recently purchased around 150 2x4x12 AC2 treated boards and the specs were horrible. Each and every board was anywhere from 1/2 to 1" to long. I needed them to be exact and they were not. The price was good but after I factored in the additional cuts and time need with my miter saw to get them right it was a wash.

Local lumber yard. I'm a contractor so my opinion is horribly biased against the big box stores, every time I go in one I leave angry.

local yard. often cheaper than a big box too! and they will often deliver for free or almost nothing.

For 50 2x4's I'd probably just go get them from wherever was close.

Have them open up a new bunk and grab the pretty ones.

No matter where you go, you'll need to pick your lumber.
I built a fair size deck last year and picked every piece for ease of installation. I did this daily, estimating my work for the day. I realize this isnt an option for everyone considering the distance to the lumberyard, but dealing with twisted garbage is infuriating.

I would consider Steel, Lighter and if you shop industrial supply cheaper then wood. Always square and never rots. I do a lot of trim work for fun and profit never buy big box at least 40% cheaper and better quality at local lumber yard.
