A friend of mine suggested I try Foobar to play mp3s as the quality was much better than WinAmp. I'm not sure if this is the placebo effect, but I think it does sound better. It has a wretched interface, however. What's a good compromise (or frontend for foobar) that is easy to use? I don't care about fancy graphics or skins, just audio quality and ease of use.

I heard NadAmp - even though it has been discontinued (or so I heard) - still has the best sound by far.

Have you tried using the Enhancer plugin for Winamp? I was blown away by the sound as compared to the basic Equalizer settings for Winamp.

I even tried Foobar, but I still prefer Winamp + Enhancer...

eh? you want fancy graphics or skins but you don't like the minamalist gui of foobar. You shouldn't hear a difference between foobar and winamp because the author of foobar was also paid to tweak and enhace the ins and outs of audio for winamp.

generally, those enhancer plugins are extreme placebo. They are good and worthwhile if the encode is crappy and gotta make up for a terrible lossy codec or of the sort. But generally, people don't use them for that effect. they use them to make sounds that the intended artist didn't want. Just my 4 cents.
