After reading all the problems with SB Live 5.1 and Win2k, what sound card would you guys recommend for Win2K? What's the thing with Liveware 3.0 not supporting AC-3 pass-thru as stated on Creative's Official Liveware 3.0 FAQ?

Q12. Does "Live!Ware 3.0 for Windows 2000" support AC-3 pass-thru?

A. No, "Live!Ware for Windows 2000" does not support AC-3 pass-thru. Currently, the feature is only supported in Live!Ware 3.0 for Windows 95/98.

I have a P3-450, 256 Mb ram running Windows 2000 Server. I just got Cambridge Soundworks DeskTop Theater 5.1 DTT2500 Digital and plan on getting a Toshiba 12x DVD-Rom. Which sound card would unleashthe most power out of my system? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For my mini-lan of two computers. One as a gateway and hopefully soon to be a web server under Linux and the other as my desktop that also takes care of Windows logon's and stuff when I run my gateway under Win2K professional.

Win2k is VERY overkill for that... but that's not the point :)

The SB Live! works fine in win2k server however it is true that AC-3 passthru doesn't work in win2k (any version) :(

I tried running Win2k Advanced server for a while because I wanted to see what it could do and I got it for free but it ended up just being a hassle. For normal desktop use, even being a gateway, Win2k Pro is definatly the best. As for sound cards, SB live is great but to be honest anything like SB 16 is still good enough unless your an audiophile.
