Best Soundcard - $$'s no object

I just ran into some cash, and am in the market for a new soundcard... Im pretty much looking for top of the line, obviously not wanting to worry about any problems. My specs are located in my sig under 'VicodiN's Medicine Cabinet', if your curious...

Thank you for your time and input

What kind of speakers and amplification do you have? Do you want features or fidelity or both? How about replacing your "Sylvania Piece of shiznit"?

I saw the little TV sitting next to the big speakers and I almost pissed my pants laughing, then I noticed the projector.

I"m not much of a big audiophile, but I do really like the breakout box on my game theatre xp. I can plug in several audio sources at once and outputs so I never need to switch around cables. I believe their newest model supports 7.1 surround sound.

My roommate is big into production audio. He tells me that the best sound cards are external ones (quite a bit better and more $$$ than the extigy) because they won't have interference/noise from the computer itself. But then, you'd only ever be able to really appreciate it with professional studio quality monitors or headphones.

I'd give you a brand or something, but I'm out of town right now.

yep, do you want that sound card for gaming, for listening music or for making music? Whats the rest of your sound equipment? And yes, it can become quite costly 🙂

Well, as the Audigy 2 is no audiophile card its ok 🙂 I'd say its a gaming card, altough all the in's and out's... not bad. But I guess musicans will still prefer some other cards, as well as audiophiles.

Btw: Just installed the kX driver for my SB Live today, and, wow. Anyone knows wtf the DSP stuff does? Cool... but to me probably useless 😀 But the sound seem to have improved a bit (I like the 10 band equalizer 🙂 ). Need to try it out with one of my "audiophile" CDs 🙂 And some issues with the original creative driver (newest version) are solved. Cool 🙂

Im a big time gamer... Looking for 5.1 capabilty and the whole 9 yards. At the moment, I utilize my Plantronic headphones fer gaming, as well as mp3 usage (both listening and making music)...But like I said, Id really like to change from my SBLive Xgamer thats about 3 years old now... Basically, Im looking for a frickin' tank of a card 😉

BentValve:

Sylvania's replaced 😉

Thank you all... Your continued input is being noted and appreciated

Probably the best card with gaming in the picture is the Audigy2. IMO a TBSC has the best output for music of any consumer card (not pro card). Saying that, the Terratec Aureon Space, which uses the VIA Envy24HT chip, is also pretty decent for music, and also has gaming capabilities thanks to the Sensaura 3D API.

Cheers

uh... Plantronic headphones can mean alot. Usually headsets, right? From 5 to ?? $. I'd say with that sort of stuff a Audigy 2 would be ok... or maybe have a look at the TerraTec Aureon series. They should be good for gaming too and might have better sound (the Audigy 2 still has some issues).

JJ is insane.🙂

My dad has 40 foot by 20 foot wall in his sound room stacked with built in speakers I think over 100. Plus a real pipe organ in that room . I'll remember to take some picts next time I go over I think you'll get a kick out of it.

Im wondering about what soundcards to get also, I dont want to spend too much but this onboard C-Media is crap. I have 4.1 Klipsch speakers and i mainly play games and listen to music, not to much dvd or music mixing. What would you recomend I get so i can really crank them and have them sound good.

always two things to consider, of course, when buying things like sound cards and graphics cards...the 1) hardware itself and 2) the drivers. drivers usually are the downfall for cards that end up underperforming. also, note: turtle beach no longer supports the santa cruz/sonic fury effective the end of 2002 (although the current drivers work well in 98/xp).

having said that, i think the audigy 2 is the best overall sound card (definitely best for gaming). 🙂

but I don't believe Creative will ever release good drivers. I installed the kX drivers for my Live and now I'm quite happy 🙂 But the Creative drivers... urgh!

kadajawi - true. i'm only referring to the audigy 2 drivers, though (original drivers worked fine for me and new ones were just released at the end of december). but yeah, i've heard the horror stories regarding creative's drivers and the live! series of cards and the first audigy cards as well. sorry you've had to deal with that. so far, reading various forums, it seems the audigy 2 drivers are holding up well to scrutiny.
