Best software to convert AVI files to formats that can be played on DVD Players like DAT, MPG

I have tried couple of softwares to convert AVI files to DAT or other format which can be played on DVD Player. My DVD player doesnt support AVI format. Please let me know a good conversion software.

winavi converter convert it straight to dvd files, and you could use nero to burn it straight to dvd and watch it on tv, but it's not free though...

I'm using VSO Convertx

It will burn it for you or you can save the image.
It has handled all the files I've thrown at it without errors, divx, mov,wmv.
It will also do the pal to ntsc, or ntsc to pal conversion for you.
If there is room you can also put multiple videos on the same disc.

Its not the cheapest of programs at 40.00 but it does what I want so its worth it.
