The best software will always be what's between your ears. You can benefit from a separate sound editing solution in addition to whatever video editing package you prefer.

For $400, you get editing, compositing, and visual effects, including color grading. It's sort of a lightweight all-in-one suite. Lots of plugins available. You can do cool titles, green screen, and 2D & 3D compositing & tracking. It's sort of like a lightweight after effects.

On the flip side, you can get Adobe Creative Cloud for $50 a month - that gives you full access to Premiere, After Effects, and all of the other creative programs that the pro's use. And that's compatible with popular tools like the stuff from Video Copilot:
