Best small SUV?

My current vehicle is giving me some trouble, and this got me to thinking. If I had the money - which of course I don't, but a guy can dream, can't he? - I would like to replace it with something new, and more-or-less equivalent to what I have now:

1993 Chevy Blazer S-10
-4-door
-4x4
-200HP, 4.3L hi-output V6
-automatic transmission

That's about it. I'm interested in what everybody here would reccomend - either to use or to avoid - and the reasons why. anything listed here is flexible, although I would deffinately like to keep the vehicle in the same size range. No tanks and no go-karts, thank you 😛.

Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute (though they aren't "real" rock climbers)
Jeep Liberty
Nissan Xterra

I'd say either the Liberty or Xterra

I'd go with the Xterra myself. I live near the Liberty assembly plant and it seems as though every other week there's some news story about something that's wrong with the Liberty and how the plant is affected by the repairs.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I don't need an out-and-out rock climber, but this thing isn't going to be strictly a highway vehicle either. I do a lot of camping/fishing/hiking and such during the summer, and spend a fair amount of time driving on...shall we say...unimproved roads. Dirt/mud, loose gravel, washed out most of the time - with the accompanying deep ruts and rough rides, stuff a normal car would easily bottom out on. Snows somewhat frequently during the winter here too. Nothing deep, but the road crews aren't exactly the fastest in the world. Especially on subdivsion streets.

The ford escape would probably have the best ride since it 4 wheel independent suspension. It seems smaller than the xterra though which I'd consider small to mid-sized.

No kidding. Since I got that thing back in April to replace the Ranger that I totaled (and no, the accident wasn't my fault), it's had

-new fuel injectors

-new muffler

-new tires put on

-ball joints & idler arm need to be replaced before the thing will track straight (pulls left now)

-My dad ripped the lock assembly right out of the tailgate 😛. Whole switch came off in his hand. Now all I can do is open the window on the back.

EDIT: forgot one: 4 wheel drive (4 hi specifically) doesn't work correctly. Fortunately what's wrong isn't a major repair.
