I think my parents are having sleep problems, what's good on the market right? Any non-prescription ones? or is prescription the best way?

I bought a bottle of Benadryl for the sole purpose of using it as a sleep aid :p

Edit: In fact, I'm starting to get rather drowsy right now...

You mean money or marital problems?

The best drug for sleep is actually excersise. At times when I could not sleep well, I always found that if I could get physically tired, I could sleep.

I would add in addition to this some 5HTP and if anxiety is a problem some Relora.

alcohol if the only thing they care about is going to sleep. the sleep is not as high of a quality though, but there is no greater feeling in the world than passing out in a comfortable spot.

Ambien works very, very well, but caution needs to be excersised when using it. It needs to be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water. It will kick in anywhere from a couple minutes to about a half hour, depending on the size of your body. Taking it on a full stomach will render it almost 100% ineffective. It's addictive for some (cravings) and psychologically habbit forming for others (can't sleep w/out it). If the patient isn't fully committed to fixing their sleep patterns within the 14 day recommended dosing period, he/she is in for bigger problems when they try to get off it.

I have no experience with CR, but it's just a controlled release. It doesn't have the "punch" that the regular Ambien has, but it supposedly keeps you asleep longer thoughout the night. Note that I'm an extremely light sleeper, and the normal Ambien always let me sleep 6 - 8 hours.

No experience with Lunesta.

Rozerem - USELESS. I've tried it several times and it did nothing. I've surfed quite a few insomnia boards, and the idea is that Rozerem is nothing but hype and clever marketing.

Melatonin - Melatonin in pill form does not cross the blood/brain barrier. If it helps one sleep, then it's only the placebo effect treating a psychological issue. I hesitate saying that only because I don't want to "ruin" it for people who have trouble sleeping and have found results with melatonin, but at the same time, many people get frustrated because it doesn't help them and they don't understand why. If you have a deeper problem with insomnia or some other sleep disorder - one that is not "in your head" - melatonin will probably not help.

That's the anti-histamines.

If one wants sleep one should just get Benadryl, eating acetaminophen for no reason is not a good idea.

I would like to know this also.
Diphenhydramide HCL,Doxylamine succinate,melatonin-I have a tolerance to all these and ambin, lunesta.
None of these work for me even in shovel fulls

A note on using antihistamines as a sleep aide: For some people, antihistamines are a stimulant. Not only does this not help them to sleep, but they can also raise their blood pressure.

This is what I use, and it's very effective. It's naturally produced in your body and I don't think it's addictive. It works quickly and you can buy a big bottle of it at Walgreens for ~$10.

I've never taken any over the counter sleep that's worked and I tried a lot of them, now that I have a prescription for Ambin I'm set.

But apparently it takes a lot more for things to effect me than the average person.
