I used to use mapquest. It generally sucked. Convoluted directions, and even once told me to go the reverse direction on a one way street.

I just tried Yahoo's map service, and wow, the directions actually make sense and the number of turns went from ~20 in mapquest (I tried all the different routing options they had too) to 4 in yahoo.

Is Yahoo the best out there, or are there others as well?

i tend to use yahoo just because the directions seem to be of the easier variety. except for a few times. i don't like map quests' layout. it kind of sucks IMO.

I generally use mapquest... but always use an actual map. Mapquest gives me a general idea while I navigate the quickest route with a map. (Usually roadtrips ;))

I use mappoint (MSN) because the maps themselves are more detailed and easier to read.

I use yahoo maps.

Beware of dirt roads that they show on the map though.

I went on a camping vacation back in July of this year and used Yahoo maps to get directions, then compared them with another map to make sure it was accurate.

It was with one exception. There was a 15 mile hard dirt road that was listed as a county road (which it was) and yahoo maps placed that in the directions and the map listed it too. We didn't know until we pulled onto the road that it was going to be a dirt road. We decided 'well it is on the maps so it must be an ok dirt road' so we proceeded down it. About 1/2 down there was sheetflow crossing the road about a foot deep and 100 yards long. I couldn't believe it! I told my wife, who was driving, to go and do not stop for anything. We made it through that with little problems and a few miles later, BAM, another one. We made it through that one too.

Next time we know, go the 30 mile long way around instead of taking a 15 mile shortcut. The 'shortcut' took 1 hour to get through even though it was only 15 miles long.

I thought yahoo maps were powered by mapquest?

I have a copy of Streets98 that'd I use for every trip. The maps are damn accurate (even shows how the creek flows around my property in the country) and get me there every time. Even though the maps are going on 4 years old, they're still fairly accurate.

It wasn't all that expensive either. Very worth it, as it's much easier to use and much faster the mapquest (and popup free :D)

They used to be. Yahoo switched over to a proprietary system about 5 months ago.
