What are the best single player games out there these days? I don't have internet at home and I'd like to waste some time. Ability to LAN is a plus so I can play with the GF.

Recent purchases are X3:Terran Conflict (I liked X3 Reunion), Neverwinter Nights 2.

However, Neverwinter Nights 2 has the worst camera/control system I've seen and it's almost frustrating to play but we are currently working our way through that, and when she isn't home I play X3:TC, but I have a feeling we're going to need something new to do in the next month.

I'm not too picky about genre:

Games I've liked over the years:

Oblivion
Everquest
Civilization 4

All those games took a bundle of time to play. I'd rather play something with lasting power, not something like COD4 where we'd run through the campaign in 5 hours.

I was thinking maybe Dragon Age or Mass Effect or something like that. Divinity 2 caught our eye but not sure about it as I haven't read much reviews. I was also thinking of Crysis Warpack or whatever it's called, where it has the 3 Crysis games in there, warhead, original, and something else. But I'm not sure if those are online only.

Fallout 3 is a fairly popular single player game.

For coop and LAN? Maybe Borderlands.

Crysis had both single and multiplayer. Crysis Warhead was a shorter single player game, while Crysis Wars was just multiplayer.

Despite the complaints, Fallout 3 and Oblivion are still insanely popular. The assloads of official expansions and user mods certainly help.

If you really wanna stimulate the old grey matter, I highly recommend Galactic Civilizations 2, or Sins of a Solar Empire.

If you haven't played TC very long, make sure you get the latest updates, adds several more plots. But finish the final fury missions before you update, the latest patch can break that plot. Also grab a few mods and scripts for it, the game can last a long time with the variety they bring.

If you haven't gotten beyond the sword for Civ IV, get that as well. In several months Civ V should be out. Galactic civilizations 2 is also good.

I liked Mass effect 1 and 2 also. Highly recommend them, but they are more linear than oblivion and can take maybe 20-30 hours. Dragon age I havent played, but it is supposed to be good.

If you dont have internet at all, make sure anything you buy does not require an internet connection to activate the game.

No internets at home? The horror!!!

Borderlands as was mentioned would be good for coop. Dragon Age and the expansion will give 30-100 hours of entertainment. Word to the wise on DA. Listen to the dialogue, dont just banzai through the game. Since you have a DX11 chip AVP is lots of fun as well. I do have to say that for a SP Metro 2033 is fantastic. Interestingly Alpha protocol seems to be a deep game. I have only played about 20 mins but it seems the diag trees are very deep and the missions are layed out ala' Deus Ex.

I'll throw in another vote for the Mass Effect Games. I hear their making mass effect movies sometime in the future. If they make those flicks right they would be the next star wars type phenomenon.

I wouldnt bother finishing up NWN2 unless you enjoy being severely disappointed.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll pick up Dragon Age and the Mass Effects at Best Buy next time I go there (provided I don't need to activate the games online)...

Hmmmm you might want to do a little research on google. I don't know if the cerberus network is required for mass effect 2. Anyone?

I'd recommend Fallout 3. I spent quite a bit of time with that one!
STALKER is a great series, once you get into them.
HL2 needs internet, I believe to get it up and running

You could buy them and get cracks for the games, but thats a legal gray area. So I'll leave that up to you.
