Best short-range varmint gun?

Subsonic ammo plz. Air guns wont work because I can't be bothered to recock the gun every shot. Looking for something cheap, highly accurate up to 50 yards, and with cheap (rimfire?) ammo.

Either .22 rimfire or 22-250. 22-250 has some awesome velocity, but if you're only going to 50 yards any .22 rimfire will probably work fine. subsonic ammo is easy to find for it.

The ruger 10/22 is a hard gun to beat.

Also, do they make frangible or expanding .22 rounds? This shit is close but it's fairly large. About the size of a house cat....

I used to go down to the animal control place. They loan out traps. Catch "vermin" in trap. Place .22 short in .22 pistol. Put barrel through hole in trap. Fire into back of the "vermins" head.
Rinse, lather, repeat.

You can get a Ruger Mark III with built in suppressor.

Yes you can get a suppressor for .22lr, but it will take you between 4 and 6 months to get the paperwork back from the ATF.

if it's the size of a large cat a 22-250 might be better, but will be louder than a 22 and would definitely need a suppressor to keep your neighbors from caring.

You can get hollow point .22 rounds, but they are ehhh.

Look at Marlin's 22s, they seem to get pretty good reviews and don't cost as much as the Rugers.

Any Ruger, Marlin, Mossberg, etc .22lr automatic for less than $250 will work great at <50yds.
Check out your local Gander Mountain or gun shop. Used .22 auto rifles are easy to come by, cheap and will work great for you.
You can get a used .22lr auto for <$200 easy.

A Ruger Mark III, then. You can drive nails with one of those.

I was going to suggest a small pistol-sized crossbow, but then saw that you didn't want to recock the thing every shot as with an air rifle. It certainly would be more fun than an air rifle, and the ammo is perfectly reusable.
