Best SCSI DVD Drive..?

Um.. both yamaha and plextor make CD-R drives, not DVD. Neither make DVD drives.

I think only Sony, Toshiba, and Pioneer make SCSI DVD drives. Pioneer is the only one that makes a SCSI above 5X. They make a 10X SCSI, the 16X is IDE only. Once the next generation of IDE DVD drives from pioneer come out, they will make a 16X SCSI.

I have the 16X IDE, and kinda wish I had gotten the 10X SCSI, but at that time the 16X IDE had just come out, so the 10X SCSI wasn't availible, only the 6X SCSI was. So I got the 16X IDE. Its plenty fast, and since its the only IDE drive on that channel, it doesn't matter much anyway.

How does one get to be a Golden Member? I think Utopia is half asleep when he answers this questions. 😀

They have a 10X Pioneer SCSI slot-drive now, eh? Cool beans.

You should be able to pick up a Pioneer DVD-303S (6X DVD, 32X CD) fairly cheaply . . . you don't really need a fast DVD - the only time it comes into play is when you're fast forwarding a movie or installing software.

Bit of off-topic, but how big of a role does buffer play in DVD Rom drives. I'm currently shopping for a scsi dvd & I'm pretty much leaning toward the Pioneer one because of bigger buffer (512K, compared to Toshiba's 128K). But, then I also heard the Pioneer ones tends to die sometimes, where Toshiba is very solid... Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

(I'll probably get the Pioneer one - I own one of their IDE slot-load DVD rom & it's the coolest looking drive... 🙂)
