you mean the Massachusetts Institute of Technology? i don't think that's in Massachusetts. OP specifically asked for Massachusetts.

MIT's from Massachusetts but if he wins, he'll move to DC but if the OP is okay with DC it might work out.

UMass has a decent CS program. The main difference between the MIT and UMass experience will be the students. The teacher quality will be the same (professors in both places are hired to be good researchers, not good teachers). The students at MIT will be more motivated (a little frighteningly so), but the students at UMass will have a better perspective on life and enjoy themselves a bit more.

There aren't many other inexpensive colleges around Mass that have great CS programs. If ECE is something that you might be interested in instead, perhaps look at Olin College as well. They will have better teaching, but less high-level research opportunities (you can always go to other schools or companies in the summer for that). It's not super cheap, but it's less expensive than a lot of other private colleges.

All the ones in MA are good. BU, NU, Umass, Olin, Harvard.... but MIT is in a league of its own. Crashtestdummy hit the nail on the head. They are VERY motivated students to the point where lots of the grads turn down job offers so they can start their own "consulting" firm (ie, they do not want 9-5 jobs).

That said, wasn't Olin that college that used to be free if you got accepted?

They're scaling it back. It was initially free tuition, room and board, because the school wasn't yet accredited (too new). Then it became just free tuition. It's half price now because they're still trying to build a reputation (and making it cheaper brings in more talent). That will probably go away in five years as well.

WPI.

MIT is more research- and graduate-focused. Not that their undergrad sucks or anything, but that's not where they make their reputation.

Well a lot of computer companies have their headquarters accross the river from DC in Virginia, so maybe somehwere near there might be a good place to go to school. If you want to know if a CS school is good ask other colleges if they accept their credits. If not, dont go there.

From my experience, schools that advertise the most should be ignored. Those are usually the schools with lousy accredidation. You can cry now or later.

There's a reason why Google, Microsoft, VmWare, etc and soon Amazon have offices directly across the street from MIT.
