Best scanner for job

I want to copy a few hundred photos using a scanner. What's the "best" one for the job under say 200 dollars.

I see 48 and 42 bit machines, is there much difference between the two? What's the major difference. Please reply as if you are talking to a person of limited technical knowledge (me).
