What are you favorite abandonware sites that you know are safe?

I use Abandonia and Home of the Underdogs, but it can't hurt to know of some more.

I use GOG.com, since $6-10 is a fair price for games like Blood, Heroes of MM 2 - 3, MOO 1 - 2, Fallout 1 - 2 - Tactics, Painkiller, etc.

There are enough classics available legally to keep me busy, so I don't need to warez the ones that aren't yet.

Sometimes you can't buy those old obscure games. Steam helps, but theres still a couple you can't find.

Just buy your games, and don't worry about what happens to your computer.

Yes, because it's so easy to buy games that were created 15 years ago and are no longer available through the publisher and developer that went out of business shortly afterward.

Did you miss the latest case of a game publisher just using a cracked version they copied off the internet?

I also remember Ubisoft posting a pirated crack as an official patch when their DRM was causing problems.

So no matter where you download software from, even legal sites, be sure to scan it for malware.

Holy moly, HOTU is back? Thanks for the information, as I thought they died for good. It and Abandonia have always supported my old game addiction, but if Macintosh emulation is of any interest to you (they have a few exclusives, one I highly recommend being Step-On-It!) check out the Macintosh Garden. I won't link it since there's some non-abandonware stuff as well, but the vintage Mac OS 7 goodness makes the site worth it.

Ubisoft pirated someone else's software and made it available for download on their site? I hope the feds do the right thing and shut those pirates down.

there are quite a few games that are simply not anywhere to purchase. Now that doesnt mean you should get them for free, but sometime abandonware is the only option. Ebay can help, but sometimes you just cant find them.

clok1966 is right, most games found on abandonware sites can't be found anywhere even if you are ready to pay for it. The best - safe - abandonware sites i know are www.xtcabandonware.com and www.abandonia.com, I never had a virus problem with their games. I also like the www.bertsabandonware.com : much smaller site but has a better navigation/search. You can also go to www.abandonwarering.com for an extensive list of abandonware sites.

Having a good up to date anti-virus is never a bad idea :hmm:.

Have fun! :awe:
