Best RPG's curreting out and in the works?

Ok, moving 4,000 or so KM to a place to "look" for work, permanent housing is up in the air atm, not going to have time to deal with usual PC BS and I'm not willing to take my PC with me for a good few months.

This leaves me with consoles, as they are easier to transport, cheap to buy (compared to my pc rig) and can be easily sold.

What i really want on the console is a RPG, but so far Oblivion is the only good one out that i know of (got the standard one for PC, bought gold version with 2 expansions for 360) and then there is mass effect to look froward to... i hope.

The system doesn't matter, if it's not 360 and it's good enough i'll just buy the system and sell it later if there are no more good games for it.

My question: What good RPG's are currently out that could justify buying a system, and what is coming out in the next few months that looks really good.

(note that i play other genres on the 360 atm, but it's RPG's that are lacking and the original reason i got the 360)

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Out for new systems? Definitely slim pickings at the moment.

360 has Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Lost Odyssey (soon). You can play the demo for each to see if you'd like them. Note that Eternal Sonata will be rereleased for the PS3 with added content.

PS3 has White Knight Story coming soon in Japan, but who knows when it will be released in the US.

if you really want to tap into an RPG cornicopia, you will learn japanese and buy a japanese ps3 or wii. Youll have more RPGs then you can shake a stick at.

No luck with the Wii though.

you're right! i could have sworn they changed it since launch, but i just peeked at playasia and it looks like they are all still region free. hooray!

🙁

-edit- i'll check out ES and LO, but blue dragon got some bad reviews and i'm not overly excited with ES's graphic style. -edit-

I can't speak for the games on Blu-ray format, but Blu-ray disc movie regioning has been an issue for some people.

I'd like to play ASH (Archaic Sealed Heat) for the DS. Currently out in Japan, supposed to have some of the best graphics the DS has put out along with interesting gameplay.

However, the majority of releases so far have been region-free as well. There's a page somewhere that has been keeping track of that stuff.

(Japan and America share the same region anyway)

I want to try that game out as well; I wish I knew Japanese. 🙁

None of the new consoles have a great library of excellent RPGs, although more are promised to come later on. The DS doesn't even have many great RPGs. You have to dig further back into the GBA library for that.

Honestly, the PS2 is the best right now as far as RPGs go.

Get a DS, there are tons of great RPGs for the DS and GBA.

Rune Factory is pretty entertaining if you also like Harvest Moon, Pokemon is pretty addicting and then there are games like Magical Starsign and Etrian Oddsey which are worth taking a look at.

Also, coming in a few days is Dragon Quest Jokers and early next year there will be a new Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles game for the DS.

'tis a good time to own a DS.

A new PS2 + Sony 2-pack of memory cards = $160, there are dozens of PS2 JRPGs, most taking at least 40 hours to complete.

3D: Xenosaga 1-3, Final Fantasy X & XII
2D: Final Fantasy 4-9, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears

Plus tons of non-RPGs like God of War 1-2, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Katamari Damacy 1-2, platformers, etc. etc. etc.

Never looked at the DS before so i'll get back to you on that later.

Never thought abut the ps2 before, sounds like a plan.

PSP and DS are getting revamped released of the final fantasies, could be worth checking out if staring at a small screen for an extended amount of time is your cup of tea. Although now the new PSP's can connect and play through your TV so it's a whole different story.
