Currently my parents have a cable modem and I have a cable modem. Yes I know I should have networked them from the beginning but I didn't feel like drilling ;) Finally I think we should save the money and get a router. I'm leaning towards Linksys Rounters because I have heard very good things about them, but tell me what is best for sharing a cable modem between two computers.

I tell you what, buy a linksys router, but buy the 1 port model...

That way if you ever have more than like 3 or 4 computers on your lan (I have 2, but 4 slots are taken up (print server) you can up your switch, to say a 8 port or 16 port if needed...

That's my philosphy...

Linksys is a good model, but it can lock up if you're trying to view a webpage (via the web address and not the server's IP address) when the server is behind your router...

It sucks :( But if you don't do that, I wouldn't worry...

Is there a certain model that you recommend? I work at Staples and see a lot of different ones.

I recommend either the Netgear RT314 or the SMC Barricade line. I've heard a lot of bad things about Linksys' firmware. Head over to the forums of DSLreports.com
DSLreports.com. There's usually a lot of comparisons there.

If you consider yourself technical and like to tinker then get the Netgear. It has a lot of options and is very customizable, which also makes it complex to configure.

If you're looking for something simple get the SMC, it includes a built-in print server - but not bi-directional. It's very easy to configure.

have the linksys 4 port running 3 machines (two win2k and a 98SE) with no problems.
