Best route for Durango to Denver on Saturday?

Current plan is to take 160 all the way to I-25 and then up. Mapquest and Google both want me to basically take 160 to 285 and then go diagonal to Denver. I've also heard to get up to Salida and then take 50 to I-25. Wouldn't 285 be 2-lane and really damn slow in the mountains? I really hate getting stuck behind slow traffic.

160 to I-25. I've gone both ways from that area and it's quicker and more scenic on that route. You'll go through the San Luis Valley, which is my favorite place in the state. Be sure to wave at the Fountain, Colorado sign for me as you're coming up I-25 🙂

I'll do that then. If I can get myself up early enough I think I'll drive up to the sand dunes too.

At the dunes is there much to see without hiking? I don't want to get all sweaty and then have to drive another 4+ hours.
