What would you say is the best RPG to ever be released and one that is a must own.

Well sticking to modern times, the Baldur's Gate series tops the list. Wizardry 8 was great if you're into party adventuring in 3D. Morrowind was great if you're into solo adventuring in 3D. Ultima Ascension was very immersive and playable after the official and unoffical patches and the music was top-notch.

Going back in time Ultima 7, Ultima IV, the Bard's Tale series and Questron come to mind. :)

If we're talking old school, I LOVED the Quest for Glory series from Sierra... by far some of my favorite games, EVER. As for new stuff, the Baldur's Gate series is by far my favorite, I own both BG and BG II along with all the expansions.. great stuff. Morrowind isn't bad, but it got boring to me after awhile. In addition, I just started up another game of Neverwinter Nights(after completing the game a few months ago and not playing for awhile) and now I'm back into it, the new AD&D rules are great in that game and it's also incredible.. so take your pick really.

I would have to say me too for baldur's gate and also final fantasy series for the ps and ps2 and I hear yes square will be coming back to Nintendo for a gamecube title. That is one of the reasons why I just got a game cube.

I haven't been playing RPG's for too long, but I really enjoyed EverQuest for the friend's I made on it. NeverWinter has been great recently.

I just played the demo of Ars Fatalis...it's much like the old Ultima Underworld games. I may pick it up.

For best writing, storyline and actual role-playing (where how you develop your character truly affects the plot) I'd say Planescape: Torment and Fallout 1-2 are all a level above Baldur's Gate. Not necessarily more "fun" since that's totally subjective and some people hate wading through the extra reading.

Old, old school: Ultima Underworld, Wasteland, Ultima 2 & 4, Wizardry series, Bard's Tale 1.

But not NWN? ;)

Dungeon Siege and Diablo 1 were both a lot of fun but 99% plot-free so they don't deserve to be on the list.

PC: FF7, BG, BG2, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale (haven't gotten NWN and Icewind Dale 2 yet; kinda hard to choose from the Bioware games, they're all good :p)

PSX: FF7, Grandia

PS2: Grandia2

Speaking of EOTB, they have just released a downloadable addon/patch for Neverwinter Nights which allows you to play according to the old Eye of the Beholder game :)

Check it out! (I own the EOTB trillogy and I thought it was awesome that you could incorporate your characters from the first to the second and then to the third).

Ultima III, IV, and V were my all time favorite. Heck I still play them!

I have BG, BG2, IWD, IWD2, NWN, etc. and they are great games, but none of them have captured my attention like the old Ultima games. I think though that I'm a lot older now and simply dont have time to play those games anymore like I used too. All the good old days....

Oh, and anyone that mentions Diablo/Diablo 2 should be shot.

Ultima IV, the Bard's Tale

Agreed - although I'd have to go back a LONG ways, as I played those on my C=64 in high school.

More recently, I've enjoyed both Diablo and Dungeon Siege; Ultima 9 was fun but just too buggy for most people to enjoy - I even had to cheat 5 times just to get past the bugs.

There are two patches, one made by the user community that fix a lot of the game's problems and allow you to finish without cheating (unless you get stuck in a logic problem...I seem to remember a problem with the Valoria area with demon timing that was still broken). It's too bad EA wrecked that series.

A recent goodie is Divine Divinity (pay no mind to the horrible title). It's got some pretty bad bugs, but it's like a more fleshed out Diablo w/ some Neverwinter Nights thrown in. It's got great atmosphere and a pretty involving quest system.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis... but would that be more of an Adventure, or RPG? RPG is a really vague term. I mean, in essence, Quake is an RPG. You're role playing a crazy marine guy :p

ive been playing Devine Davinity lately.. great story and alot of quests to keep ya busy

btw I keep hoping Origin or some other developer will remake the Ultima series (U4 being the best of em) with a currently used game engine like Diablo2/dungeon siege/Devine Davinity engine. that would rock my socks!

Ultima (and Ultima Underworld) with the Dungeon Siege engine could be pretty sweet, but a 2D engine like Bioware's Infinity engine would also be good :)

The idea of a RPG varies greatly from one person to the next. In my opinion a good story with a genuine plot is the most important factor. The second would be a certian degree of freedom in your actions, and having your actions play a role in how the game unfolds. I would join the people who have already mentioned the Baldur's Gate series and Planscape: Torment as my favorites. Fallout 1 & 2 are worth mentioning also.

Chrono Trigger was really good (SNES)

Dungeon Master and Chaos Strikes Back are classics (there are redone versions that run under Win32).

One of my favorites on PC was Buck Rogers I & II (using variations of the AD&D rules, made by SSI)
