There will be a small hole on the top of the rice cooker to let steam out. If you don't wash the rice good it will spit and sputter making a mess.

I stopped washing and rinsing rice and I havn't had any problems at all

zojirushi rules all. if you can afford it, get it.

i personally have the tiger one, and it works just as well. look for a rice cooker that has the heating element thing all the way around and not just on the bottom - it keeps the rice from just sticking and burning at the bottom.
