Best resource for discovering new music

MustISO

Lifer
I typically check out what's been released each week on Amazon but I'm looking for a better resource for hard rock / metal where I can preview songs.

Any good sites out there that have 15-30 second previews and list new releases along with older releases? Maybe something that shows suggestions.

internet radio is about your only hope other than random navigation of youtube or something.

I used to like Emusic, but I ditched them a couple years ago over policy changes. What I liked was they had articles on particular styles of music, and featured albums from those styles. Since they've gotten corporate, it may suck now, but it's worth looking into.

As much as I hate iTunes maybe it would be worth trying it on a virtual machine just to see how it does.

I used to use Emusic as well. They were great when they started, haven't been on in years.

what kinda music are you looking for, anyway?

mp3 blogs is where I get all my stuff from. Looks a google search in metal mp3 blogs results in some decently active ones.

Rock / hard rock / metal

Kind of a broad range but some stuff in my current play list:

Slipknot, All That Remains, Stone Sour, AFI, Seether, Mudvayne, Diecast, Dry Kill Logic, Rise Against, Offspring, Spineshank, Pantera

I'll check out spotify and thanks for all the other suggestions.

Well for discovering new metal (or old metal) I use this thread at Head-Fi. And most of the time people post Youtube vids so you can preview songs that way.

Just ask AT

From those bands I recommend:
-Disarmonia Mundi
-Soilwork
-Silent Civilian (same vocalist as Spineshank)
-Stereomud
-Five Finger Death Punch (new album is great)
-Sonic Syndicate

A little further outside those genres, but may still enjoy:
-In Flames
-Katatonia
-Opeth
-Lamb of God
-Inhale Exhale
-Anterior

I've found quite a bit of good music by listening to XM. You can check out the playlists for most of the stations online and then go sample the music on youtube.

Miku Monday threads.

Keep track of what you listen to with Last.fm's scrobbler. It gets pretty good at recommending/playing things you'd like.

Or just listen to last.fm. You'll get a broader variety than Pandora, plus some decent indie stuff.

You could also poke around Live365, and see if anything looks interesting. You won't be able to access VIP stations, but there's a bunch that are free. Also, it's fairly cheap if you want a membership. It's worth it for the microniches you can listen to. There's something for just about everybody.

it probably just responds to everything by recommending U2, white stripes, or other hipster douche-rock.

If that's what's already in your collection, it'll happily recommend more. However, it's actually very good in differentiating genres and recommending stuff within your desired genre.
