While watching DiVX movies with either the ffdshow or DiVX codec, there is alot of well, "blockyness". Most of the time I watch them with my monitor set to 1024x768. Is this too high? When I set it down to 800x600, the blockyness goes away but everything is a bit blurry. I'm using an ATI Radoen 7500 and a Envision 770-e monitor. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It all depends on the quality that the movie is encoded in, both in bitrate and resolution. Some files are low res but have a high bitrate, which makes colors and blacks look sharper with a more fluid motion, those are best viewed at the lowest resolution possible.

If the file has a high res but a low bitrate, best is at high resolution, but you might get that blockiness you're talking about. The best compromise is to get videos with high bitrate AND high resolution, or at leastr a nice compromise. Most of the stuff you'd find on kazaa or what not is encoded very poorly, and is of very low quality that won't look very good no matter how it's viewed.

Rarely you will find a divx movie with 720X whatever, in those rare instances I make my desktop 800x600 for the movie.

Otherwise I just place my resolution at 640x480, 32 bit color, and bump up the settings for divx quality on full.

When you run your desktop at higher resolutions you are just stretching the film which is a detriment causing the blocks.

Go to control panel/display/settings/advanced/monitor tab -> Uncheck "Hide Modes that this monitor cannot display" option in Monitor tab ->go to adaper tab and click on "Display all settings" and click on the resolution you want.
