Best remedy for Shin Splints?

Quit running on hard surfaces and spend big money for good shoes.
Heels, such as in cowboy boots and engineer boots help.
Aside from that, a force field around them would be nice so tears don't well up every time something comes in contact with your shins.
 
1) new shoes if your others are beat up
2) ice & ibuprofen
3) this is preventative:
Before you run, do these simple little exercises...keep your heel firmly planted on the ground, and just start tapping your foot as fast as you can, for as long as you can until your shin is on fire. Do the other foot. Then repeat both feet a second time.
Do this 2x again after you finish running.

It's an incredibly simple and effective way to prevent future shin issues.
 
try to build up the muscle around the shin to help cushion impact. In GOOD well supported shoes (nike bubbles work well or springs or whatever they're using now) walk a lap or two around the track on your heels with your toes in the air. The muscles around your shins should flex. I used to do this as part of a warm up as a preventative measure for shin splints. You can also pump this muscle by doing the same movement of standing regular to standing on your heels. BTW there is no way to look cool while doing these 😛

NO NO NO

Most shoes like Nike Shox are not supportive, they are purely cushioning shoes that are overmarketed. For support maximum support get something like the Asics Gel Foundation or the Saucony MC Stabil. Chances are you don't t need a maximum support shoe in which case a moderate support shoe like the Asics Gel 1100 or the Saucony Grid T5.
 
Well, I know you're hurting. You can get rid of them by having someone massage them out. Yeah, that hurts horribly, but it heals very quickly if you can do that. Otherwise, just ice it and try to reduce physical activity - lift instead of running or something. Take it easy, man.

Don't confuse motion control with stability. It really comes down to foot types as to what type of shoe you need. If he has a normal to high arch a motion control shoe is going to increase his chances of injury.

Shin splints are typically induced by fatigue, or poor running form because of fatigue. Your muscles absorb a lot of the impact when running. When they get exhausted they can't take that impact as well and things like shin splints and stress fractures show up.

Wearing a shoe that absorbs that impact better and building up the strength of those muscles in the shin help prevent them from happening...as does just having better overall running endurance.
 
Can't do anything about shin splints (once you have them) besides put the running on hold and wait for them to go away. Ice 'em down, rest up, and make sure you've got decent running shoes with cushoning inserts for next time.
