Best registry cleanup program?

What's the best free registry cleanup program out there? I think it's about time...computer is slowing down a good bit.

Prolly jv16 PowerTools but 'taint free. An older free version of their RegCleaner is available. Otherwise, EasyCleaner and CCleaner are good though the latter does more schtuff you may find usefull even in conjunction with one of the others.

2K/Xp does a nice job with the registry, if your computer is slowing down, I doubt that the problem is with an "unclean" registry.

A couple hundred kilobytes of registry values cause no noticeable impact on performance. Even if it was extremely bloated the only thing you might notice a difference in is searching through the registry.

Just leave the registry alone.

I use CCleaner when I do a driver update or whenever I get the urge to test out a bunch of new software packages. It's been pretty good to me thus far.

While minor superfluous entries may not significantly slow down the computer it's still a valid maintenance thing to keep it clear of left-over crap and anomolies. Compacting and defragging it should benefit performance though.

Why? If it's not impacting performance or stability why do you care?

Why do I delete a file which I no longer have use for despite it using an insignificant amount of space? Anal retentive or just good organizational practice? In the long run it's easier to keep clean and preclude problems than wait until its out of control.

FYI, I'm not a "formatter/reinstaller" and keep my OS for years over successive hardware sans issue so must be doing something right 😉

But you deal with those those files on your own all of the time so having extra files laying around can get in your way, the registry is in the background and you never see it under normal circumstances.

I've used Ace Utilities. I've downloaded the 30 day Try it free and used the Registry cleaner. It has a whole bunch of utilities and you can keep using them for 30 days. I've found AU to be great for those immediate fixes and you can let it expire or buy it. I always use it on first time computers to clean their registry.

I'd say that nothing is the best cleanup program. Every so often somebody comes on the forums asking for help after a registry cleanup program boogered up their system. It doesn't happen that often I guess, but it's enough to not worry about a non existant problem. If you really want to clean your registry, regedit I think is probably the best. That way you know exactly what you're removing, without blindly pressing buttons.

jv16 is very good, but on x32 I use Fix-It, and on x64 I use RCleaner by CleanMyPC.

Fix-It is my favorite. I was actually a beta tester for the first version waaaaaaaaaay back when.

Regedit FTW!

If you don't know what you're deleting, why are you deleting it again??

Also, if you do not know how to backup your registry and restore your registry even if your computer is non-bootable then you should not be using any registry cleaners (or regedit) at all!!
