Just upgrading to a new Pioneer plasma, want to pickup a receiver any suggestions? Was thinking about the Denon 1610?

The best bang for the buck receiver in the $250 range is Sony's STR-DH800. B&H is selling it for $248.99 , Free Shipping. You will also get 3% cash back if you have Bing cash back account.

No

and NO!

Onkyo and Denon are good bets for that price range.

If you shop around a bit I'm sure you can find something like the Onkyo SR-607 in your price range.

I'd be pretty wary of sony, also, although I guess I don't really have any personal experience with their receivers so I could be wrong. But, either way, denon, onkyo, or even yamaha should be safer chocies than Sony

Is it the reliability, sound quality or services of Sony that you're having problem with ? I'm trying to understand the root cause of the problem so that I can make a better choice next time around. Thanks in advance.

Since you're talking about a Plasma display, I'm going to assume you want this for home theater in general.

I'll just throw in that whatever you get, you will probably want "HDMI upconversion" - this was high end stuff a year ago. This means the receiver can take a Component, SVideo, or Composite input and turn it into an HDMI output. The ability to do this means you only need one HDMI cable running to your TV from the receiver, and everything else plugs into the receiver. $250-$350 is about where receivers capable of this start, so you won't have a ton of options if you want this feature.

Most units these days do "HDMI switching" - they take multiple hdmi inputs and can 'switch' them to one output. This is ok but doesn't really give you the full benefit of eliminating all those cables going to the TV (where they are most visible).
