OCZ does it again. They break yet another hurdle on the A64 platform by introducing RAM to end all RAM and they do it at stock voltage to boot in dual channel.

I was a hair's breath from purchasing OCZ PC3700 EB RAM when I saw their internal review of PC3700 Gold Rev3 that uses a new Hynix chip revision (or so I hear).

Hynix as you may, or may not, know has seen great performance with P4 and poor performance with A64.

Up to this point the only chips that were any good for overclocking A64, or even running stock @ or above DDR500, were Micron and a few recent Samsung chips. These you have seen in OCZ Platinum series RAM as well as the EB line, Crucial Ballistix and a few others. That is until now.

OCZ PC3700 Gold Rev3 can reach 270 FSB on socket 939 in dual channel using a 2X512MB setup @ only 2.8v with 2.5,3,3,8 timings.

OCZ EL PC4000 Gold Rev2 uses the exact same chips as the above has the same stats as the above but rated slightly higher.

As you know socket 939 boards can only do about 2.7 to at most 2.85v without moding or using the OCZ DDR Booster (which doesn't work with all boards). Also the more voltage you add to RAM the more heat it generates and you can possibly see diminishing returns without active cooling.

Running it at these mild voltages allow a lot more weekend warrior type overclockers to wet their feet and not have to worry.

Keep in mind that your milage may warry based on a lot of things including, but not limited to, your Power Supply, case temperature, motherboard (you won't find two motherboards the same even if it's the same model), and your CPU. CPU is more important then ever because the controler is on the chip instead of the motherboard. If you get a CPU with a not so great controler you may see poor overclocking results even if everything else is perfect.

Remember, there is no guarantees in overclocking. Take what you can get and be happy you got it.

Look at the results in this link.

I'll be getting mine in the next two weeks.

Enjoy.

Please update us when your RAM arrives. I'm interested in seeing your result,
I only seen one person "nutcase" that posted about that rams results in the Ocz forum.
I would like to hear from a few more people with there results using OCZ PC3700 Gold Rev3/OCZ EL PC4000 Gold Rev2.
With different configurations before I make my purchase. So if anyone else has this ram please post results thanks..

Depends on your definition of an arm and a leg, Newegg has 1 GB OCZ Gold Edition Rev3 (512x2) for $278. If this ram is as good as that link says it is than it might just be worth the price tag.

Anyone have any idea if these new OCZ golds can handle 2x512MB in a s754 A64 with good timings, speed, AND a 1T command rate?? If not, what would be my best bet? There's no way that I'm shelling out $400 for 1GB of EB3700 =-(
