I need a RAID mobo for the extra ide connections I'll need, so anyone got suggestions? I'm not totally turned from sdram, it's just that i heard ddr would be the better companion.

If I was buying a socket A RAID mobo today, it would be a Gigabyte 7DXR.
If I was buying one in about a month, it might be an Abit KG7-RAID. I'd like to see a review on one.

I will buy a socket A RAID mobo in the next week or so, it will likely be the Gigabyte GA-7DXR. I won't buy the EP-8K7A+ even if it is a few dollars less because Gigabyte has a bigger name, because Gigabyte is better known for stability, because I owned an Epox EP-7KXA and it was a horrible mistake, because the Gigabyte board is said to overclock better, because the gigabyte board has more overclocking options, because the Epox board is said to run hotter, because the name 7DXR is cooler that 8K7A could ever be ;)

But, that's just me :D

because the Gigabyte board is said to overclock better,

How? It doesn't have multiplier or voltage adjustments, does it?

I bet 8K7A overclocks better... = ) I need to figure out how to get my AGP card to work in 3d at this 187.5MHz. =P Beat THAT! I also have a screen shot of a horribly unstable 190MHz FSB on 8K7A. =}

The gigabyte board had both multiplier adjustments, and is able to go up to a fsb of 250, while the epox board is limited at 166

I'd probably get the GA-7DXR if it weren't for it being so expensive and hard to find in stock.

So I'm thinking either the IWILL KA266-R RAID ALI Chipset, 266MHz Bus, Socket A Motherboard or the EPoX 8K7A+, anyone else got opinions? places to get either? i'm fairly new at this as this is my first built athlon box from scratch, so that might be a consideration.

If you have some $$ more to spend, go for the 7DXR, it's the more complete and better looking package. You get the same performance for some $$ less with the 8K7A.

sure it has, see the review below, and on top it has AGP voltage adjustment, FSB 250 in Bios, and some features the Epox does not have.

The epox is capable of bus speeds way above 166, the bios just dosent let you go higher yet. AGP voltage control is advertised so a future bios update should add support for it.

Well the gigabyte is available in in the UK now and we are last to get any new boards so you guys across the pond should be getting a flood of them very soon. I have put my board together this evening and will tweak and play tomorrow, then post some results here.

I agree on this! The Epox can go hiher, as shown in the forum here. However, we should to be very careful with such statement to avoid disappointment: For such kind of extreme overclocking you need a good running board (luck), quality memory (luck) and a good running CPU (luck). That applies for every motherboard. There is never a guarantee that you can get this or that oc speed.

I can only says that with the same memory and CPU which are good for FSB 170 MHz on other boards, I could get only FSB 163 on the 8K7A. I know from a friend (who bought 3 8K7A) that all of them were overclocking quite differently. :)
