i'm looking for a new video card that won't roar like my 9800gt, which is dying at the moment.

hoping to get something near the high HD5XXX level that is relatively quiet and very stable/reliable. any ideas?

5770 is very quiet and can be found for under 140. I hear 5850 is also pretty quiet as well, and it has more performance. Not sure if you can get a 5850 for under $300 easily though. You'd need to shop around a bit.

Not sure what resolution you play at or what games, but if you want a nice quiet card for under $300 that is reliable go with a Radeon 5770, they sell on Newegg for around $150. I would not suggest getting the $250 Radeon 5830, its performance is not that much better then the 5770, not worth spending the extra $100.

Anandtech article about 5830 if you haven't read it yet:

If your mobo supports crossfire, pick up a 5770 now and later add another, crossfired 5770's provide alot of performance for the money.

5770 is a good choice. Gigabye, the bat man car style, or vapor made by Sapphire, Hawk for MSI, etc. These cards you can take them into ur consider.

Since you have nVidia I'll recommend nVidia. You can get 2 GTX 260 Core 216s used for about $300. This is what I wanna do as I have 1 good 8800GT left.

I use my HTPC for gaming and movie watching and noise has always been a big concern for me. The 5770 with the Egg Cooler, version 2 of the card, is incredibly quiet. I was very impressed and surprised by just how little noise the card makes no matter it's stress level. It's silent TBH. I've got a Scythe Big Shuriken that I fitted with a Nactua 120mm fan, and a couple 80mm fans for exhaust, the 80mm fans are all I hear.

If you are picky about noise, i highly reccomend the 5770 as a consideration for low noise levels and solid performance. The card performs better than the 4890 and GTX260 in Metro 2033, in fact it is neck and neck with a GTX275 in this game with the new 10.3a's. So it's performance is improving from what orginal reviews showed in newer titles.
