Ive just ordered the 3Ware 6200 escalade raid card and am now looking for a couple of HD's to hook it up with.

I bought the card for raid 1 mirroring, but seeing as this card offers near raid 0 performance when reading even tho' its doing raid 1 arent too bothered about having the fastest IDE drive on the planet ;)
More important is how quiet theyre goin to be.

Would i be best getting a couple of Fujitsu Fluid Bearing 7200rpm HD's or would a couple of IBM GXP 75's with the "accoustic setting" set to quiet suffice? The systems going in my bedroom so noise is a real concern.

If any of u guys have tried the "accoustic" tweak for the IBM GXP would appreciate some feedback on how much difference it made :)

thanx,

rockhard =)

IBM GXP 75's are your best bet, judging from comments/reviews I've seen. They would seem to be the fastest IDE hard drives currently available :)

Hi Snow

Thanx for ur reply, beginning to wonder if i smell

;)

U got any ideas on how effective that "accoustic" tweak is with the GXP's?
My old GXP's are kinda noisy in the seeking department :(

rockhard:

If you need absolute quietness get the Fijitsu. If you want to try something other than IBM, I would recommend Maxtor.

I was considering the Fuji Hd's, but after reading up on the benches on storagereview looks like i'd take up to a 30% performance hit with the Fuji's over the GXP? hmmm?

You reckon i'd notice much of a difference in real world usage?

Yeah, openworld is great for me :) Download at 60K/S, ping on Uk/euro servers reaches as low as 20ms, but usually around 30 on demon/barrysword ones. No problems here, couldn't recommend it more! :)

Uh... yea, I believe so, Im waiting forever and ever for Storagereview's Seagate Barracuda ATA III and Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 reviews, but they never come out.

Check the Maxtor review out at Gamersdepot, its quiet and fast, consider it.

grrr, u makin me jealous ;)

I noticed that Claranet were offer a 512/256 version of ADSL instead of 512/64! :) £40 a month tho' :( Be kinda nice for napster :D

Maybe me having to wait not such a bad thing, be able to shop around hopefully when this local loop unbundling mullarky finally gets sorted :)

Hows ya USB TA behaving - Win2K? U able to use it as a gateway with a DHCP server instead of relying on ICS?

BTOpenworld is 512/256. I think all the ADSL services in the UK at the moment have AT LEAST 256k up load speeds.

I'm using Win98, and the modem is fine, no probs. I use ICS to share it on a network at the mo.

Thanx for the link :) I'll have a drool over that later :)

Any heads up on the new IBM GXP60's? Are these going to fluid bearings like the fuji's? Kinda tempted to hold on a few weeks and see.
Ive got a couple of GXP34's already and love them except the noise and that "accoustic" tweak aint compatible with them :(

LXi:

right from the page...

<< The typical problem associated with acoustic enclosures is cooling - an overheated drive is a dead drive. The SilentDrive? fully addresses this issue by having two aluminium "cold plates" which cover both the top and the bottom of the drive and conduct excess heat into the surrounding air and chassis mountings. >>

...

<< Exclusive to Quietpc.com, the SilentDrive? is supplied with a temperature-sensitive sticker which can be affixed to the surface of the drive while it is enclosed. After running the drive up to temperature, the drive can be removed from the SilentDrive? and the sticker examined to see the maximum temperature reached. By using this method, you can be 100% confident that the drive is not at risk of overheating.

Any drive which does run too hot for its own safety can be returned for a refund; such drives would typically be older high-speed drives running at 10,000 rpm. The vast majority of drives on the market today are easily capable of running inside the SilentDrive? at greatly reduced operating noise without any risk of overheating, and your temperature-sensitive sticker will prove it! To date we have not had a single return made due to the drive running too hot while enclosed.
>>

btw, nice user image LXi :)
