Best QUIET cooling for overclocked FCPGA processors?

After looking at Intel's spec sheet for PIII processors, I see there is a big difference between power draws for a 700Mhz processor (18.3 Watts) and a 933Mhz processor (24.5 Watts). I can see where a stock fan for a 700Mhz processor might not be enough for its 933Mhz brother.

(Side question - I wonder if the stock heatsink/fans are the same for the two processors?).

Bit of history - I have this GlobalWin setup I got from 2Cool for my overclocked 333Mhz -> 500Mhz PII ... problem is, this thing is WAY WAY TOO LOUD - too loud IMO. I really don't want to replicate the same problem with my new rig, which has twice the likelihood of an issue (I am building a dual FCPGA machine).

So my question is, what it the best combo for overclocking 700Mhz FCPGA processors - Golden Orb, Alpha, actually, I don't even know what's out there. Or would the stock cooling be enough?

An Alpha with a quiet fan should work for you. I heard the newer Golden orbs are pretty quiet too.

I saw the 60mm Sunons are 34db, too loud in my opinion. Can you recommend where to pick up Alphas and/or quiet 60mm fans?

Just get yourself a golden orb. Save money and time. It works great. Very quiet combination.

I have it on my processor. It keeps the cpu cool with the best of them.

I'm running a 23.5 cfm Sunon 60 mm fan with my Alpha PEP66. Works great and very quiet. See my sig. By the way, in the reviews this setup still kicks the Gorb's ass, but the Gorb is probably OK if you're staying under 900 MHz. Click on Mr. Cool for details...

Apparently the newer Intel retail chips are shipping with version 2 of Intel's HSF. Apparently from the one review I read (don't have the link handy) it did surprisingly well. Not up to Alpha level, but then again it's a stock HSF and hey it's cheap. To bad you can't buy them separately.

If you aren't gonna be doign heavy overclocking, why not consider a taisol socket A heatsink(just modify the clip for p3 use)? They are tremendously quiet(its a low output fan, but it still performs well). The best part? You can get them for under $12.

For example, here's the performance i'm getting between a taisol/alpha pal6035/gorb.

936(highest the orb can get). 1.7 volts

ORb: 51C
Taisol: 46C
Pal6035: 44C

975(highest the taisol can get it) 1.75 volts

Taisol: 48C
Pal6035: 46C

All tests done with artic silver and tested with a cusl2. a 650E running at the above mentioned speeds/voltages. I don't use the taisol full time, i just bought it because i found one for $13 local and decided to try it out, but I'll say this: It is an excellent heatsink for hte price.

Mike

PS, the model i was using is hte CEK733092
found here: Taisol heatsinks. :)

When I bought my Hedgehog heatsink, I got one of those big high RPM delta fans to go with it. I'm kinda picky about sound too. The delta fan spins so fast that it vibrates everything inside my computer case. I tried everything to get the sounds eliminated, but nothing worked. Then, I replaced the delta fan with one of the fans that was on my slot1 Alpha. Boy oh boy! This made a huge difference. My case was totally quiet again, and most importantly, the cooling performance was the same as with the delta fan.

Dang...I just put an order in for a pep66 w/delta. If it's no diff...then maybe I should change my order.

I have an alpha pep66 and a delta fan. I used the delta for a while but the loud high pitched humm was bothsome. It was so loud the i would turn off my computer whenever I was not using it or if i wasn't playing an mp3 LOUDLY. The moise basically drove me insane when i wanted to watch dvd's or something on my comp. So I ripped off that loud sucker and put on the old pos fan from who knows where. The degree difference is only like a few degrees. A few degrees for my sanity, very very worth it.

Second the golden orb option. If you want it really quiet, rewire it for 5 volts, which works okay on my rig, and is inaudible.

Or just use the stock heatsink. I've got a Malaysian cb0 PIII 700 running at 1010 with the stock heatsink. But I did scrape off the lame heatsink pad and use high quality silver heatsink goop. The Gorb is quieter though, although not by much.

I wouldn't waste money of fancy heatsinks, good PIII 700's don't run that hot.

Of course, some of the new Phillipines cb0's are not overclocking very well. I got two that wouldn't make it past 868, even at 1.85 volts.

The higher volts you need, the hotter the cpu will get. Try to get a cpu that will do 933 at 1.65 volts.

Sure, I'd love to. ;)

Well, this will be an interesting journey.
