I understand the prebuilt is taboo in these parts but i need to know what the best ones are. I am entering architecture as a freshman and am shopping for a fast notebook..a desktop replacement-type notebook. Alienware was one of my front runners but has mostly negative reviews...now im looking at Acer..what do you ppl htink?

The Acer Ferrari 4000 series is one of my best recommendations.. Great CPU, adequate graphics.. Okay battery life.

There's also the Asus Z71V with a nice CPU and okay graphics with an average battery life.

Of course, if you want more speed, take a look at Sager's notebooks.

VoodooPC if you got the $$$
ABS PC supplies a very well built pc at a great price.
They have 2 systems at newegg.com right now sporting a Athlon 64 3200+, with integrated video (but also a PCI express x16 slot for future video upgrade) for $599 & $699 with free LCD.
Not bad, not bad
Check them out

There are quite a few high end lappys out there, but there are only a few keyboards that are good. I bought an Acer Aspire and although the performance is adequate the keyboard is cheapie. For $1,500 I expected better. So...as always, try before you buy.

Dell XPS... best bang for the buck out there. Forget Voodoo or Alienware unless you need to spend $1000 to $1500 more for a name and at best equal performance.
