Best program to convert mkv to avi?

Handbrake is easy to use, free, and works well at converting video. I use it for all my movies.

thanks! any ideas why only mkv and mp4 are options in the drop down menu? I can find no way to convert to avi (i wrote it in manually and its encoding, but i have a feeling it wont work).

Because avi was a hacked together mess we used back when there were few free options ....they've rightly ditched it for modern formats like mkv

you can change the file extension but the container format is not changed..... it won't work.

Yup - avi isn't really an option in Handbrake because it isn't really an option to encode your videos. MKV and M4V (MP4) are really all there is anymore. If you reallllllly want to do it this way look to virtualdub, etc.
