Best program to burn in new OC'd CPU?

Hello all!

I'm new here, and its been a LONG time since i've OC'd a CPU (last time was a celery 300A). I have a new 2500+, A7V8X-X and 512MB PC 3200 DDR. I currently have it overclocked substantially and would like to find a program that will push the CPU to its limits so that I can see how hot it gets, make sure it stays stable, etc. Anybody know of a good program? There was one I used to use, I think it looked for Mersenne primes, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the program.

On a side note, does anybody know the location of a good guide that will give me tips on OC'ing my CPU on this board (i.e. BIOS settings, etc.) Thanks in advance for the help!

Prime95 is great for maxing out a CPU and it's also good for stability testing. If there is even the slightest instability in the CPU or RAM, Prime95 will stop and tell you there was an error.

I also use 32mark2001 (actually I can't right now, grr it doesn't like my newly installed dx9 and card) because you can start to SEE differences in performance instead of running boring stuff - best to use both.

I think you're the only person I've talked to other than me who overclocked on an a7v8x-x; hope it's fun. Let us know!

Prime95 is the program you're looking for. The Torture Test variations will expose any instability in your system very quickly.

I'm running an overclocked A7V8X, but without the extra "X" at the end. I don't get to join the club.

Hi Guys, I to have that motherboard (A7V8X-X) and I have just ordered a Barton 2500 - Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to sqeeze some more power out of it

You may have used Prime95. It looks for Mersenne primes.

yup prime95 is a good one i think..

btw i have a 2500+ running on an a7n8x-x @ 200 fsb (3200+ speed) for a few weeks now, runs prime95 8+ hrs stable, max temp under load is 57C (cpu socket diode) using stock cooling. hoping to get an slk900a or such soon!

I hoped I don't get flamed (too) much for posting in this AMD thread lol but when I was o/cing my P4 2.6C, I used P95 and if it failed in the first ten minutes then I knew it was unstable, but if it went longer than I was okay (it went fine for 48 hours once I got it stable). P95 is the perfect program for testing (even running seti@home, 17orbust, and SuperPi all at once didnt have errors but Prime95 finally did). Anyway, once P95 has run for an hour successfully, open up a copy of Seti@home, SuperPI (set it to 32M) and 17 or bust all at the same time and let it go for 24 hours. Then, restart and run memtest86 for a few passes (of all tests) to see if your memory is in good shape.

Well, you're not really going to be sure that your system is stable until you run Seti@home for about 2-3 years. But that's just common knowledge.

It also can find errors in RAM, as it can be set to use up a lot of RAM. I needed to change my timings a wee bit in order to pass a good long round of Prime95 error-free.

memtest86 is probably better for finding errors in ram than p95 but that's just mho...

tmpgenc is also a good program to use for stability as well....

Thanks for all the replies guys! Also, any online information to OC an A7V8X-X would be handy. I currently have my 2500+ running (stable) at 2160 MHz (12x180), running at stock voltage. Is this pretty good? Its damn fast regardless. If anyone can point to threads/guides regarding the A7V8X then it would be much appreciated. I've looked here an there, but am still not sure what the best settings are to try and get this bad boy up to 200MHz. Anyways, thanks again guys!!!

this may/may not help you.. every chip is different

Thanks for the link - it gave me a few clues as to what to do next, and some heat benchmarks as well. When they mention "Diode" temperature, is that the temperature as registered by the mobo? If so, I guess i'm doing ok (45C @ idle, 54C under Prime95 torture test). Anyways, thanks again for the link.
